And Jesus called them to him and said to them,"You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
-Mark 10:42-45
This passage has been a huge conviction on my heart. In this passage, the disciples James and John had come to Jesus asking to be placed in the highest positions in Jesus' kingdom. Jesus told them that in earthly kingdoms, the rulers and officials lord over and exercise authority over the people. This isn't the case in the heavenly kingdom, however. Those who are servants will be given the highest positions in Heaven. Those who are slaves, the lowest of the low here on earth, will be exalted in Heaven! Jesus came to earth as the ultimate example of this. He came to earth to serve, not to be served. Jesus, ALMIGHTY LORD OF THE UNIVERSE, humbled himself to come here as a man, to serve mankind, and to ultimately die the most wretched and cursed of deaths on the cross...for us, so that WE might live. If our God can humble Himself so greatly for our sake, we shouldn't think twice to humble ourselves before man to be servants in any capacity for the sake of the glory of the name of Christ!
